Norwalk, CT (November 19, 2019) - Norwalk firefighters, Westport firefighters, medics, and Connecticut State Police responded to a five car pileup on Merritt Parkway.
The accident occurred at around 4 p.m., on the northbound lanes of the parkway, between exits 41 and 40. The accident was described as a "chain reaction" by Deputy Fire Chief Edward Prescott. This area of the parkway was closed immediately following the accident, as two people needed to be extracted from their cars.
One man was injured and had to be extracted from his car, but it did not take long. It only took a few minutes for firefighters to remove him. He was transported to Norwalk Hospital by Westport EMS for treatment of non-fatal injuries. A female passenger was also trapped in her crushed car. This extraction was much more complex and took longer to complete. The unnamed woman was also transported to Norwalk Hospital with very serious injuries.
The four other drivers involved in the accident were not injured.
The parkway was reopened at a little after 5 p.m. that day.
